March is the month in which much of the off-season corn is in the emergence and initial establishment phase. Although visually simple, this is one of the most critical moments in the entire culture cycle. Errors made at this stage are difficult to correct throughout development, limiting the crop's production ceiling.
The success of off-season corn begins even before sowing, involving decisions related to soil quality, area management and the efficiency of operations carried out immediately after soybean harvest.
Corn physiology at the beginning of the cycle
In the first phenological stages, corn defines a large part of its productive architecture. The potential number of rows per ear, initial vigor and root exploitation capacity begin to be established in the first weeks after emergence.
Any stress at this stage, whether water, nutritional or chemical, reduces the initial growth rate and compromises the development of the root system, limiting the absorption of water and nutrients throughout the cycle.
Importance of the root system
Off-season corn relies heavily on an efficient root system to tolerate dry periods, common in autumn. Well-formed roots increase plant stability, improve nutrient absorption and increase physiological efficiency.
Compacted, poorly structured or biologically poor soils restrict this development, resulting in plants more sensitive to environmental stress.
Common mistakes in the field
Among the most frequent errors observed at this stage are:
- Planting in poorly structured soil after soybean harvest.
- Failures in pre-planting desiccation.
- Chemical stress caused by pesticide residues.
- Low biological activity of the soil.
The use of biologicals such as Bio Azoz e Bio Pho contributes to greater microbial activity and better use of nutrients, favoring the initial development of corn. Associated with well-made applications, with support from Route-VIP, the soil-plant system becomes more efficient from the beginning of the cycle.
Off-season corn is not created by filling grains, but by initial establishment. Investing at this stage ensures greater production security throughout the cycle.
